Top Tamil Movies 2010

As we approach the end of year 2010,  I decided to pick top tamil films of the year. This year possess very few meaningfull movies. The films listed below are not rated in any order but listed as per the date of release.

1. Thamizh Padam
Directed by C.S.Amudan(Debut)
Cast - Mirchi Shiva,Disha Pandey,Paravai Muniyamma

First spoof in Tamil Cinema. Though the second half drags, this kinda film are new and should be welcomed for this stressful world.

2.Vinnaythandi Varuvaaya
Directed by Gautam Menon
Cast - Silambarasan(Simbu),Trisha,Ganesh,Samantha
Produced by Escape Artists Motion Pictures & R. S. Infotainment

Gautam made Simbu to act and discovered new guy in him. Simbu - Trisha chemistry just rocks in the film. Music by A.R.Rahman is just a bonus.

3. Angaadi Theru
Directed by Vasanthabalan
Cast - Mahesh, Anjali
Produced by Ayngaran International

Vasanthabalan once again proves that he can make peoples watch film with no stars. Story is hard hitting. Songs add to the sucess.

4.Singam
Directed by Hari
Cast - Surya,Anushka
Produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja & BIG Pictures

Its an out and out masala entertainer as usual from Hari. One cannot avoid these kinda film as well. Surya has given a power packed performance.
Dont forget the punch dialogue - "Pasikku Pongal saapuduravana mannichudalam, anaa rusikku payasam saapuduravana mannikkavemudiyaadu". What a dialogue.

5. Kalavani
Directed by A.Sargunam(Debut)

A simple small budget film. A village oriented comedy film with well etched out performance.

6.Madarasapattinam

Directed by A.L.Vijay

Nirav Shah cinematography & Art director Selva sets is  highlight of the film. The team recreated the olden day Chennai. Arya & Amy Jackson performance is noteworthy.

7.Boss engira Bhaskaran
Directed by M.Rajesh
Cast - Arya, Santhanam, Nayanthara

Why this film? All out comedy film. Hero of the film is Santhanam and Arya should be appreciated for his support. Nanbenda has become a brand word of today's youths.

8.Enthiran
Directed by Shankar
Cast - Superstar Rajnikanth, Aishwarya Rai
Produced by Sun Pictures

A grand film from Indians. Shankar should be appreciated for his try to make impossible possible. Superstar did a subdued role in this film. It is purely an out & out Shankar film. A.R.Rahman's Music adds grand to this Grand.

9.Mynaa
Directed by Prabu Solomon
Cast - Vidharth, Amala Paul,Thambi Ramaiyah
Produced by John Max

Another film on the lines of Paruthiveeran. But the location of the film, performance of the artist especially Thambi Ramaiah, BGMs by D.Imman, M.Sukumar's Cinematography made the film something special.

10.Nandalala
Directed by Myshkin
Cast - Myshkin(Debut), Aswathram(Debut), Snigda Akolkar, Ilayaraja's music
Produced by Ayngaran International

Last film in the list but not the least one. This film might be inspired/ripped from the japanese film Kikugiro, but that's not a matter when its good. I could not resist myself from adding Ilayaraja' music as cast. Without the music, the film might not have been the same which it is now. His music carries the film. Myskin's & Aswathram's performance is good. Ilayaraja has given a great background score for the film which is of world class. The awards are no  mean to him. He himself is an award to Tamilnadu & our country.

Paiyaa, Naan Mahaan Alla & Mandhira Punnagai came to the race but could not it to the final.
These films are rated with my taste which may differ from others.

Elangathu Veesuthe(Pithamagan) - Best Shot Ilayaraja song

Song - Elangathu Veesuthe
Film - Pithamagan
Year - 2003
Director - Bala
Cinematographer - Balasubramaniam
Cast - Vikram,Surya,Sangeetha,Laila

Singer - Sriram Parthasarthy
Music - Ilayaraja

A film shot on friendship between a persons of two different nature, one a intelligent cheater and other a non speaking rude guy. The story is neatly exhibited through this song. This is a background song.

The song starts with a picturesque view of western ghats in Theni district, Tamilnadu. Musically, the song starts with a flute which instantly involves us in the song. We can see the protagonists along with their friends take bath in a pond jumping into it which is a natural sight in rural place.

When Surya introduces his girl friend Laila to Vikram, he feels jealous about his friend. Next shot, Surya & co teaching Vikram to ride a cycle, which he fails and fell down. Sangeetha's love towards Vikram slowly blossoms through this. And Sangeetha riding high cycle with 2 guys.

Surya swinging with banyan ropes accidently falls down and acts as dead. This expresses the cheating and playfulness of the character. This is also showed in the train scene where he makes Vikram shout at Laila.

Love between Vikram and Sangeetha expressed through their eyes and body language. The song picturises the love between the characters among themselves.

Totally the song itself is a short film with the music as background.

Ilayaraja's music with flutes, violins, drums and other instruments blends with the song as skin and flesh. Sriram Parthasarathy has rendered a pleasant voice to the song.

Balasubramaniam has covered greens of Theni area beautifully which forms a treat to eyes.

Overall Bala has done justice to this beautiful song from Ilayaraja. The song captures the real rural life and its people.

Sometimes I feel this song is best ever shot Ilayaraja song.

Kadha Thudarunnu(Malayalam) Review

Another Sathyan Anthikkad - Ilayaraja combination Film.

Jayaram plays a role, not as lead, but as a supporting actor as film revolves around Mamta Mohandas who shoulders the film. Jayaram working with Sathyan back to back after Bhagyadevatha. He was introduced after 40 mins into the film.

Story/Plot of the film
A Hindu girl marries a Muslim boy against the wishes of their parents. They live happily with their 3 year daughter. But the guy was killed by some unidentified persons one day. Without any money, the girl get stranded in street with her daughter. An auto driver helps them and gives them shelter along  with his colony persons. They helps her to complete her Medicine course which she could not continue after marriage. When the auto driver starts to love her, the dead(muslim) guy's family tries to get their grand daughter from her. To escape from them, the mother and daughter flew to foriegn country as she got a job. the auto driver waits for them.

Mamta Mohandas played the role to perfection. The story completely revolves around her. The problems faced by a young widow has been naturally portrayed by her. One also felt sad that such a wonderful actor is having a disease like cancer. Let she get all the strength to overcome it.

Jayaram did his small supporting role to perfection with ease. An orphan who have more believes in astrology. Others like Innocent,Mamukkoya,Lalitha & others also did their acts to perfection. Baby Anikha is so cute and acts her role to perfection.

Sathyan Anthikkad again comes up with fine story and direction. The scene at railway station where Aiyappa devottees disturb the persons at the waiting room with their chanting shows his punch.

There is no fight sequence or any other heroism involved in the film. That is quite appreciatable. The film is more of women centric which is also good.

Coming to the main hero of the film, Ilayaraja. Again comes up with great background score for the film. There is three songs and the pick is "Aaro paadunnu doore". Nice singing by Hariharan & Chitra.
Ilayaraja uses the song's music pleasingly allover the film BGMs without boring. And there are some stunning scores as well. some of them are given below.
